Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such medications must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
